When we had our first experiences in the manufacture of printed circuit boards, in the late 70s, we were happy to be able to buy a bench drill with a precision mandrel and speeds above 3,000 RPM.
That’s because, until then, the most we had achieved was drilling in machines with giant chucks, where the centralization of small drills – which at the time were made of high-speed steel – was practically impossible.
The quality of the holes was really sad. Centralization depended on a lot of skill of the operator who centralized the plate “sandwich” with one hand, lowering the drill lever with the other. Any more sudden movement and the phenolite burst behind, when the drill did not break. Hitting the hole inside the island was an adventure and hitting the center of it was a source of great joy. Rare were the printed circuit boards where there was no displaced hole.
Sensitive Drills and Advances in Production
A major breakthrough was the “high speed” sensitive drills, above 10,000 RPM. In addition to being able to perform much better in terms of centering and speed, on these machines we were able to use carbide drills (tungsten carbide), which due to their hardness did not flex, allowing for better centering and much better hole quality. without the unwanted burrs caused by high-speed steel drills.
These sensitive drills were expensive and to have production it was necessary to have several of them. It was very common to see in the printed circuit factories, long rows of sensitive drills with 10, 12 people running hole by hole. A process that caused about 30% to 50% of the employees of a printed circuit factory to work exclusively in drilling.
In this scenario, it is clear that every plate manufacturer’s dream was to acquire their first numerical control machine. After all, the years went by and as the big manufacturers started to replace their CNC machines with more accurate and faster models, the medium and small manufacturers started to compete for the first machines that became available on the market.
The Arrival of New Machines in the Market
One of the brands that stood out the most here in Brazil were Excellon, of North American origin. Models such as the XL-3, XL-5 had configurations from 3 to 5 heads, and speeds that exceeded 40,000 RPM and some versions reached 60,000 RPM.
The Italian Pluritec with several models from 1 to 8 heads also competed strongly in the Brazilian market. Its version of 1 head with the name “Minima”, surprised and won the market with its high precision, differentiated travel speed and great versatility.
The opening of the market in the early 90s, started to make this dream possible for the manufacturers of printed circuit boards that survived international competition.
First, because with the closure of many medium and large manufacturers, their used equipment was sold to smaller companies. In addition, the open doors for importing such equipment facilitated access, however the investment was still quite significant.
As technology advanced with electronic products, especially cell phones with more and more features in very small sizes, printed circuit boards had to meet this need, and for that multilayer cards were essential, and with them holes became even smaller.
The smaller the diameter of a hole, the rotation needs to be even greater. Spindles with ball bearings, no longer supported, so air bearing (air bearing) became mandatory in new machines.
Machines with ball bearings could not achieve the required speeds for holes below 0.50mm, yet with parameter adjustments, holes of 0.40mm were made, however much smaller holes were required that required much higher speeds.
We were already talking about speeds above 100,000 RPM, which were necessary for what was called micro drilling, 0.35mm holes and even smaller ones.
But it was not just that. Blind holes also appeared, those that do not cross the plate and reach only a certain layer of a multilayer plate. All of this required extremely high precision machines.
Methods for the Quick Fabrication of Circuit Boards
The development of electronic products inevitably goes through the circuit board test (PCB) test production process. The most used method is to place the PCB file designed directly to a professional circuit board factory for direct production. The circuit board factory calls this process “proof”.
How Many Days an Express PCB takes to Manufacture usually?
This process usually takes 3 days to a week. Since time is the product life cycle during the product development process, the product development process usually goes through 3 to 5 times, and more than 10 changes make the developer unable to withstand much waiting. Thus, in the laboratory environment, developers use several methods to achieve fast onboard production. There are mainly physical methods and chemical methods.
Physics METHOD:
Using knives and various power tools, etc., manually removing unnecessary copper on the circuit board. This method is laborious and has low accuracy. Only relatively simple circuits can be used.
Chemical METHOD:
When covering the blank copper-clad plate with a protective layer, the copper is etched anteriorly away in a corrosive solution, which is the method currently used by most promoters.
This process is relatively complex, but the accuracy is controllable. It is currently the most widely used fast board manufacturing method, but there are still many problems.
The Main Disadvantagesof Quick Turn PCBs:
The accuracy of printing depends on the accuracy of the printer cartridge used. As the lines printed on poor performance printers are not uniform, it is easy to cause the wire to break and stick during the corrosion process.
The exposure time and development of the photosensitive plate is not easy to control, and the optimal exposure time for each sub-board will be different, and it needs to be mastered after repeated experiments.
It is difficult to control the corrosion process: monolithic corrosion plates cannot be equipped with professional control equipment used by the mass production of circuit board manufacturers. The temperature, concentration and acidity of the corrosion solution will have a greater impact on the corrosion quality. If you want to make a high quality circuit board, you must accumulate a lot of experience. Otherwise, demolition of material is very serious.
Sensitive plates have high requirements on the environment and must be stored under low temperature conditions. The exposure process must also be performed in darkroom conditions.
silver salts (photosensitive materials) and copper salts (corrosion products) are both toxic. If it stays on people or clothes, it is difficult to clean. In addition, due to the protection of the environment, the treatment of liquid waste after corrosion is more problematic.
The finished engraved plate must be drilled by hand, but it is difficult to control the precision of manual drilling.
At present, the production of digital electronic products, automobiles, medical products and other circuit boards has strict requirements on technology and speed. Therefore, as a circuit design engineer, you must have a solid circuit manufacturing base and qualified operating skills, and gradually accumulate and summarize.
The Role of Express PCB in Modern Equipment
In modern life, the electrical appliances we use are composed of circuit boards. If the circuit board fails, our lives will be unimaginable. So, how much do you know about PCB boards? Today we will talk about some things about PCB boards. The following is an introduction to “PCB cutting and selection methods”.
How to Choose a Suitable Express PCB Board Rapid Proofing Manufacturer
For PCB proofing users, how to choose a PCB board fast proofing manufacturer that can realize their design needs is a headache, and too much information will affect their judgment. Here are a few important points to share with you how to choose a suitable PCB proofing factory.
Quality Control Procedures for Express PCB
Decades of PCB circuit board manufacturing experience has allowed PCBsky to accumulate a wealth of experience, and we are at the forefront of the industry in process transformation and quality control.
(1)Analysis and processing of process documents:
From the beginning of receiving the production order, the process engineer will analyze whether the circuit board design documents are correct, and promptly report problems to the customer for confirmation or modification, so as to establish the process method and add on the edge of the decomposition document. Mark the corresponding mark and mark the direction on the solder mask film.
(2) Copper-clad laminate storage, cutting and drilling:
select A-level copper-clad laminates for classified storage, edging and chamfering to prevent damage to the film and impurities to the electroplating tank to pollute the electroplating solution, and accurately measure the drilling nozzle Tolerance, check repeatedly before drilling to avoid using the wrong bit. After drilling the hole, check whether the hole is offset, the hole diameter is correct, and whether the hole is leaking.
(3) Immersion copper and electroplating:
the concentration of the electroplating wire in the electroplating copper wire is regularly checked to ensure that the electroplating is always at a stable level. Each batch of circuit boards should be cross-sectioned and checked under the electron microscope. Whether the thickness and quality of the copper layer in the hole meet the requirements. The circuit board slicing report of each batch is archived in the circuit board factory for reference.
(4) The control of the darkroom screen printing workshop:
The viscosity of the ink is a very important process parameter of the circuit board, and the time and speed of stirring and the temperature and humidity of the environment are strictly controlled.
(5) Testing and problem improvement:
For flying probe testing of prototypes and small batch experiment boards is important. We need to ensure that the electrical performance of the circuit board meets the requirements, but also to test the process control level of the production process, and the test bench test of the batch circuit board to ensure that the circuit board is shipped.
The Advantages of Multi-layer Express PCB Boards Recommended in Rapid PCB Design
It is strongly recommended to use multi-layer Express PCB boards in rapid PCB design.First of all, the inner layer of the multi-layer PCB circuit board is specifically for switching power supply and ground,so it has the following advantages:
1. The switching power supply is very stable;
2. The characteristic impedance of the power supply circuit is greatly reduced;
3. The total length of wiring is greatly reduced.
Why it is Important to Conduct Express PCB Electrical Test?
Functional suitability tests of the product formed as a result of the completion of all processes are performed. On the PCB, the circuit is expected to be completed by giving low current signals between the conductor lines.
If the circuit is not completed between the desired conductive pads or matches with unwanted pads, the PCB fabrication result is found to be faulty. If the required inter-pad conductivity is not achieved, broken or insulating material contamination on the pad is considered short circuit if there is conduction between the undesired pads.
Flying probe machines and Universal grid test machines are used as electrical test machines. In flying probe machines, it performs the test process by matching the top and bottom parts of the circuit with the measuring heads it has, slow for mass production, but fast in practical applications.
In addition to being used in empty circuits, flying probe machines can also perform ICT tests on solid circuit boards.
Universal Grid test machines,on the other hand, are used mostly for mass production with their own programmable idea structure or fixture creation for mass production.Even if the fixture manufacturing process takes time and cost,it is fast and ideal for mass production.
